AU English equestrian team wraps up regular season; prepares for regionals

CAZENOVIA, NY — The Alfred University English equestrian team competed in a pair of shows over the weekend, placing fourth of 15 teams at Cazenovia on Saturday, Feb. 27, and third of 15 teams at St. Lawrence on Sunday, Feb. 28.

The Saxons now prepare for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region II championships March 20 at St. Lawrence. Twelve AU riders have qualified to compete at regionals.

Junior Barbara Koziol (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) was Alfred’s lone first-place rider in the Cazenovia show, winning open equitation on the flat.

Other top performers for AU in the show at Cazenovia were: junior Johanna Moore (Summit, NY/Morristown-Beard), second in intermediate equitation over fences; sophomore Danielle Ross (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s), second in novice equitation over fences; sophomore Katie LeSuer (Edinboro, PA/Cambridge Springs), third in novice equitation over fences; senior Beth Ulbrecht (Penn Furnace, PA/State College), third in open equitation over fences and open equitation on the flat; sophomore Ronja Ogrodnik (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten), second in advanced walk-trot-canter; and sophomore Zhenia Bemko (Cranford, NJ), second in walk-trot.

Event winners for Alfred in the show at St. Lawrence were: Ulbrecht in open equitation on the flat; Moore and sophomore Kelly Rinebold (Ontario, NY/Wayne) in intermediate equitation over fences; and junior Michelle Flannery (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) and Ross, both in novice equitation on the flat.

Other top riders for AU at St. Lawrence included: Koziol, third in open equitation on the flat; Rinebold, second in intermediate equitation on the flat; Moore, third in intermediate equitation on the flat; Ross, second in novice equitation over fences; LeSuer, second in novice equitation over fences; freshman Christine Donivan (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and sophomore Jessica Repanes (Hunting Station, NY), both second in advanced walk-trot-canter; and sophomore Jessica Maffey (Richmond, VA), third in advanced walk-trot-canter.

The following AU riders accumulated enough points throughout the season to qualify for the March 20 regional championship show: Ulbrecht (open over fences and intermediate on the flat); Koziol (intermediate over fences and on the flat); sophomore Kalcy O’Keefe (Rochester, NY/Penfield) (intermediate over fences); Rinebold (intermediate over fences and novice on the flat); Moore and senior Kate West (Pavilion, NY/Pavilion) (novice over fences and on the flat); Ross (novice over fences); senior Alicia Pickett-Hale (Concord, NH/Concord) and Flannery (novice e on the flat); LeSuer and Ogrodnik (advanced walk-trot-canter); and Bemko (walk-trot).
