Cary hurls second gem of spring trip; three games cancelled due to weather

COCOA BEACH, FL – Junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) threw her second no-hitter in as many games as the Alfred University softball team beat Castleton (VT) State, 8-0, Thursday in Cocoa Beach, FL.

Three other games on the Saxons’ 10-game Spring Break slate — Thursday against Mercy and this morning against Felician (9 a.m.) and Mercy (11 a.m.) — were cancelled due to possible tornadoes in the Cocoa Beach area. AU (5-1) may possibly play Castleton State again at 5 p.m. this afternoon, weather permitting, before returning home.

Against Castleton State on Thursday, Cary struck out eight and walked one in a game stopped after five innings. Cary, who improved to 3-0 on the season, also no-hit Southern Vermont on Tuesday in another five-inning, 8-0, Alfred victory.

Senior outfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and scored a run to lead the AU offense. Sophomore outfielder Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored; senior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in; junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) had a hit, a stolen base and a run scored; and sophomore outfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NY/Mother Seton Regional) had a stolen base and drove in a run.
