Alfred University softball team’s final games in Florida cancelled

COCOA BEACH, FL – The final three games of the Alfred University softball team’s spring trip to Florida have been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. The Saxons will return to Alfred Saturday, having won five of the six games played in Cocoa Beach this week.

Alfred had been scheduled to play Mercy (NY) College Thursday afternoon, but heavy rains and high winds in the area forced that game’s cancellation. Two games scheduled to be played Friday morning — at 9 a.m. against Felician and 11 a.m. against Mercy — were also cancelled due to poor field conditions caused by the inclement weather. Poor field conditions also put a damper on efforts to match AU against Castleton (VT) State Friday afternoon.

Alfred will return home Saturday with a 5-1 record and will prepare for the team’s home opener, a March 24 non-conference matchup with Pitt-Bradford. The 3 p.m. doubleheader will be played at Hornell High School.

AU played well in its six games in Florida, with its only blemish a 2-1 loss to Division II Upper Iowa. Junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) threw a pair of no-hitters — against Southern Vermont on Tuesday and Castleton State on Thursday — and finished the trip with three wins in three starts, allowing a total of one unearned run on three hits and striking out 21. Sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) went 2-1 pitching and batted .667 (12-for-18, one homerun and one double) with nine runs scored and six RBIs, and senior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) batted .579 (11-for-19, two doubles) with five runs scored and six driven in.
