AU men's lacrosse team tops Vassar, 9-6
Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had three goals and an assist to pace the Saxons, who won both games played in Myrtle Beach to improve to 2-1 on the season. He had four goals — including the gamewinner — and two assists in a 12-11 overtime win over Misericordia on Wednesday.
AU led 5-2 at the half as the Saxons converted a pair of man-up chances. For the game, AU was three for five on man-up opportunities, while holding Vassar scoreless on five power play chances.
Sophomore attack James Cahill (Sugar Land, TX/Clements) had a goal and two assists for the Saxons. Sophomore midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) had a goal and an assist, while freshman midfielder Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron), freshman attack Charlie Barbay (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse), sophomore attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis), and junior midfielder Kevin Kostyk (Islamorada, FL/Seneca, NJ) each netted a goal. Kostyk also won eight of 12 faceoffs.
Senior midfielder Sean Roberts (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) had two assists and sophomore midfielder Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Tim on-St. Jude) had one. Freshman long-stick midfielder Chris Frauenhofer (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) had a game-high 11 groundballs, while freshman defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and junior long-stick midfielder Dustin Jacobson (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had seven and six, respectively.
Freshman Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) got the win in goal for AU. He went the distance in net and made 16 saves.
