AU softball players sweep weekly Empire 8 honors

ALFRED, NY — Two members of the Alfred University softball team have won weekly honors from the Empire 8 Conference. Sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) was named Player of the Week and junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) was named Pitcher of the Week.

Both players were honored for their play in six games played in Cocoa Beach, FL, last week. AU went 5-1 on their annual spring trip.

Cary had two no-hitters among her three pitching victories. She went 3-0, allowing a single unearned run, striking out 21 and walking four while allowing three hits in 15 innings pitched. She threw five-inning no-hitters against Southern Vermont and Castleton (VT) State (both 8-0 AU victories), striking out nine and eight batter, respectively. She fanned four and allowed an unearned run on three hits in a five-inning 10-1 win over Finlandia.

In six games, Hedrick batted .722 (13-for-18) with a homerun and a double, nine runs scored, six RBIs and five stolen base in five attempts. In a 9-2 win over NAIA Carlow University, she went 3-for-5 with a homerun, a double, three runs and two RBIs. She also earned the complete-game pitching win, allowing two runs (one unearned) on six hits and striking out seven. She went 2-1 on the week, allowing two earned runs on 15 hits over in 20 innings, striking out 10. Her lone defeat was a 2-1 setback to Division II Upper Iowa.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, March 24, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Hornell High School against visiting Pitt-Bradford.
