Morrisville rallies late to top AU men’s lacrosse team in OT

MORRISVILLE, NY — Host Morrisville scored three late goals to force overtime, then netted the game-winner early in the extra period to earn a 9-8 victory over the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon.

AU (2-2) led 8-5 after junior midfielder Kevin Kostyk (Islamorada, FL/Seneca, NJ) scored unassisted with 7:28 remaining in the fourth. Morrisville’s Thomas Owens scored with 5:26 left and Dean Priest scored with 2:37 remaining to make it 8-7. Owens tallied the tying goal 20 seconds later and Eric Stein got the unassisted game-winning goal 1:14 into overtime.

The Saxons dominated play in the first half, outshooting Morrisville 15-7 and winning six of eight face-offs to lead 5-1 at intermission. Freshman midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) scored two of Alfred’s first-half goals. Morrisville outscored AU 3-0 in the third to draw within a goal, at 5-4, before Alfred scored two straight and three of the next four goals to make it 8-5.

Morrisville outshot AU 24-14 in the second half and overtime and finished the contest with a 31-29 shot advantage.

Zon finished with two goals, while sophomore attack James Cahill (Sugar Land, TX/Clements), Kostyk, sophomore midfielders James Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) and Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), freshman midfielder Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron), and freshman attack Charlie Barbay (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) each scored one. Malave and sophomore attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) each had an assist.

Owens scored three goals and assisted on one to lead Morrisville, while Tim Bobbitt and Stein each had a goal and an assist.

Freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) made 10 saves for Alfred. Morrisville goalie Michael Hinchey stopped 14 shots.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, March 20, at 4:30 p.m. at home against Medaille.
