AU western equestrian team places second at regionals

CAZENOVIA, NY — The Alfred University Western equestrian team finished second and was named Reserve Champions at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region II championships, held Wednesday at Cazenovia College.

Ten AU riders competed in the regional championship show, with two — senior Alicia Pickett-Hale (Concord, NH/Concord) and junior Brittany Biegel (Ridge, NY/Longwood) — qualifying to compete in the IHSA Semi-Final championships March 27 and 28 at Cazenovia.

Biegel won the intermediate horsemanship competition and Pickett-Hale placed second in advanced horsemanship. The top two riders in each event at regionals qualify to move on to the Semi-Final show, where they will attempt to qualify for the IHSA national championships May 6-9 in Lexington, KY.

Other AU riders who competed at the regional show Wednesday were: senior Kristen Kovatch (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), third in reining and open horsemanship; senior Lauren Pfeifer (Livonia, NY/Livonia), fourth in reining; freshman Kristin Eklin (Bovey, MN), junior Hannah Certis (Varysburg, NY) and senior Michelle Applebaum (Applegate, CA/Maidu), fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in novice horsemanship; senior Charity Chaffee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and sophomore Kate LeSuer (Edinboro, PA/Cambridge Springs), seventh and eighth, respectively, in intermediate horsemanship; and senior Nick Munch (Freeville, NY), fourth in beginner horsemanship.
