Alfred University ceramics alumni to hold exhibition during Philadelphia conference
Kala Stein and Shawn Murrey, members of Alfred University’s Ceramics Department, School of Art & Design, are coordinating an Alfred MFA (Master of Fine Arts) Alumni Show in conjunction with the National Conference on Education for Ceramic Art (NCECA) conference in Philadelphia, March 31-April 3, 2010.
The exhibition, “Conversations, Coincidences and Motivations: The Alfred Experience,” will be on display at Snyderman Works Gallery, Old City, 303 Cherry St., Wednesday, March 31-mid-May 2010. The artists’ opening is scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 2. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
In addition to Murrey, AU class of 2008, and Stein, AU class of 2009, the event is curated by Alfred MFA grads including Andrea Marquis ’09, Mike Fujita ’08, Rebecca Chappell ’08, and Liz Sparks ’09. They each chose two artists for the show who were influential to their own pursuit of ceramics and/or their individual experiences in art before, during, and after Alfred. The curators say this exhibit is an opportunity to showcase 35 years of Alfred ceramics alumni.
The following artists represent a range of Alfred MFA alumni from 1971-2006, whose work, ideas, and service have stimulated and challenged the national and international ceramics community: Bruce Dehnert ’91, Josh DeWeese ’91, Jason Green ’98, Rebecca Catterall ’02, Tom Spleth ’71, Sanam Emami ’02, Lee Sommers ’06, Juan Santiago ’04, Samuel Morgan ’96, Chris Baskin ’95, Judith Salomon ’77, Bill Brouillard ’76. Professor Anne Currier is also a participating artist and consultant; she has taught at AU since 1985.
