Saxons top Cazenovia to end two-game skid

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Cazenovia, 12-5, Wednesday afternoon at Merrill Field, ending the Saxons’ two-game losing streak.

Cazenovia twice held one-goal leads in the opening quarter, which ended with the score tied, 2-2. AU (3-3) scored three unanswered in the second to take a 5-2 halftime lead, then outscored Cazenovia 4-1 in the third to pull away. For the game, the Saxons outshot Cazenovia, 41-23, and converted on both it’s man-up opportunities.

Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (one assist, two groundballs) and freshman midfielder Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) each netted three goals to pace the Saxons. Sophomore midfielders Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) and Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) each scored two goals and sophomore attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) and sophomore midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) each scored one goal.

Josh Oliver scored two goals and to lead Cazenovia (0-5) and TJ Shaw (five groundballs) and Pat Sauers each scored one goal.

Freshman defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had a team-high seven caused turnovers and picked up two groundballs and junior midfielder Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) picked up a team-high eight groundballs for Alfred. Freshman Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) played the first 48 minutes in goal, made nine saves and allowed three goals. Freshman Justin Becker (Conesius, NY/Livonia) and sophomore John Landi (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) (three saves) split the remaining time in net and each allowed one goal.

Alex Ianicello went in the distance in goal for Cazenovia and made eight saves.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, March 31, at 4 p.m. against host Nazareth.
