AU softball team sweeps Pitt-Bradford
3/24/10

HORNELL, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Pitt-Bradford Wednesday afternoon at Hornell High School. The Saxons won the first game, 8-0 in six innings, and took the second contest, 9-1 in five innings.

Alfred batters hit seven homeruns in the doubleheader (six in the second game) and both AU pitchers — sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) in the opener and junior Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) in the second game — tossed one-hitters. Hedrick also hit first-inning leadoff homeruns in both contests.

In the first game, AU (7-1, 0-0 Empire 8) scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second. That’s all the run support Hedrick would need, as she struck out five and walked two while giving up only a fourth-inning single to move to 3-1 on the season. She went 3-for-3 at the plate with a solo homerun, a double, and three runs scored.

Sophomore third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had two hits, a run scored and two RBIs; senior shortstop Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) had two hits (including a double), two runs scored and one driven in; junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) had a pair of hits and two RBIs; and freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) hit a double and threw out two Pitt-Bradford runners attempting to steal.

Cary took a no-hitter into the fifth inning in the second game before Pitt-Bradford’s Sarah Angeletti spoiled the effort with a one-out homerun. Angeletti’s blast made it 3-1, Alfred, but the Saxons plated six runs in the bottom half of the inning — all scoring on three homeruns — to take the abbreviated victory.

Fenton led off the second and fourth innings with homeruns and finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two driven in. Sophomore designated player Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) had two hits, including a three-run homer, and sophomore leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) hit a walk-off solo homerun in bottom of the fifth. Passaro (two RBIs) and Hedrick also hit homeruns for the Saxons.

Cary struck out five and walked one in five innings of work to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Pitt-Bradford falls to 3-7 on the season with the two losses.

Alfred is in action next on Sunday, March 28, at 11 a.m. with a doubleheader at Hornell High School against visiting RPI.
