AU softball team takes two from RPI
The Saxons (9-1, 0-0 Empire 8) used solid pitching from sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) to take the opener, 4-1. Hedrick allowed an unearned run in the first, then shut the visitors out the rest of the way, allowing four hits while striking out six to improve to 4-1 on the year.
AU trailed 1-0 before plating three in the bottom of the fourth and later adding an insurance run in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI to lead the Alfred offense. Senior shortstop Jesika LaBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) (double) and junior rightfielder Brittany Loucks (Addison, NY/Addison) each had a hit and drove in a run, and freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NY/West Deptford) had a hit and scored a run.
First baseman Jen Bach hit an RBI-triple for RPI and leftfielder Gillian McCarthy scored a run. Felicia Bua took the pitching loss, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out one, and walking four.
Alfred took the second game, 7-4, surviving four solo homeruns from RPI (5-10). Junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) improved to 5-0 on the year, throwing five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out seven. Hedrick allowed one run on two hits over two innings to earn the save.
AU built a 6-0 lead after three innings before RPI tallied a pair of runs on the top of the fifth on back-to-back homeruns by McCarthy and Bach. Alfred got one run back in the bottom of the inning before RPI scored a run in the sixth to make it 7-3. Bach’s second homerun of the game, in the seventh, closed out the scoring.
Hedrick had two hits, including a homerun, and Fenton went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to pace Alfred’s bats. Sophomore leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) had a double and two RBIs; LeBarron hit a run-scoring double and scored once; and senior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored once and drove on a run.
Bach was 2-for-4 with two runs and two driven in to lead RPI. Second baseman Alysa Rochminski went 3-for-3 and outfielder Sheena McNeil hit a solo homerun. Bach took the pitching loss, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out one.
Alfred is in action next on Thursday, April 1, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader and sixth-ranked SUNY Cortland.
