Alfred University’s Hedrick named Empire 8 softball co-Pitcher of the Week

ALFRED, NY — Alfred University sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) has been named Empire 8 Conference co-Pitcher of the Week.

Hedrick was honored for her play last week, as the Saxons improved to 9-1 with doubleheader sweeps of Pitt-Bradford and RPI. She recorded two wins and a save in three appearances, allowing one earned run in 14 innings. Hedrick shares the weekly pitching honors with Stevens Institute of Technology’s Amanda Petrocelli.

She threw a one-hitter in an 8-0 five-inning Saxons’ win over Pitt-Bradford. Hedrick tossed a complete-game four-hitter, allowing one unearned run and striking out six in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer, and then earned the save with two innings of relief in the second game.

It marks the second time in two weeks Hedrick earned honors from the Empire 8. On March 15, she was named conference Player of the Week for her performance during the Saxons’ six-game trip to Cocoa Beach, FL. In those games, she batted .722 (13-for-18) with a homerun and a double, nine runs scored, six RBIs and five stolen base in five attempts.

For the season, Hedrick is 4-1 with a 0.60 earned run average and 21 strikeouts, and is holding opposing batters to a .179 batting average. She leads the Saxons in hitting with a .613 batting average and has posted team highs in hits (19), runs (14) and stolen bases (five). Her slugging percentage (1.065) and on-base percentage (.639) also lead the team.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 3, when the Saxons open their Empire 8 schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Hornell High School against visiting Nazareth.
