Saxons fall to Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team was defeated by host Nazareth, 14-4, in Alfred’s first Empire 8 matchup of the season.

Nazareth (6-2, 1-0 Empire 8) led 13-0 at the half, outshooting Alfred 27-7. The Saxons (3-4, 0-1 Empire 8) came out strong in the second half, allowing only one goal and scoring four of their own. For the game, Nazareth outshot AU 51-18.

Freshman midfielder Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) netted two goals and picked up two groundballs to lead the Saxons. Junior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and sophomore attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) each scored one goal. Junior midfielder Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) had one assist and picked up a team-high five groundballs.

C.J. Estes scored a game-high four goals and picked up four groundballs to pace Nazareth. Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar (one assist) and Mark DeCirce (two assists) each netted two goals. Scott Castle, R.J. Gringeri, Cory bottiglier, Greg Wagner, Kyle McLean and Kurt Detwiler each scored one goal.

Freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) played the first 57 minutes in goal for Alfred, making 16 saves and allowing 14 goals and freshman Justin Becker (Conesius, NY/Livonia) played the remaining time in goal.

Tom Dermody played the first half in goal for Nazareth, allowing no goals and making four saves and Grant Williams played the second half in goal and allowed four goals and made three saves.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 3, at 3 p.m. against host Stevens.
