AU softball team splits doubleheader with ninth-ranked SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, NY – The Alfred University softball team split a doubleheader at ninth-ranked Cortland State Thursday afternoon.

The Saxons dropped the opener, 6-0, then beat the Dragons, 5-3, in the nightcap, which was stopped after five innings because of darkness. Alfred arrived late and the first game of the twinbill, originally scheduled for 3 p.m., didn’t start until 4:50. The second game started at 6:50 p.m.

AU junior Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) earned the win for the Saxons in the second game to improve to 6-0 on the year. She allowed three earned runs on six hits, striking out two. AU got two runs in the first and Cortland answered with one in the bottom of the frame. The Saxons scored one in the second and took a 5-1 lead with two in the fourth. Cortland plated two in the bottom of the fourth and after a scoreless fifth, the game was called.

Senior outfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) went 1-for-1 with a double and two RBIs and sophomore outfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) had a hit and scored twice to lead Alfred. Junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) went 2-for-3 and sophomore DH Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) had a hit, scored once and drove in a run.

Lyndsay Rowell took the pitching loss for Cortland, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits and striking out two in five innings of work. Brooke Weidman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jessica Harman had a hit and drove in a run for Cortland.

In the opener, Cortland (11-5) scored four runs in the first and two in the second, all with two outs. Dragon hurler Katie Finch handcuffed Alfred, allowing four hits, all singles, while striking out seven over six innings to improve to 6-2 on the year. AU sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) went the distance for Alfred (10-2), allowing six earned runs on nine hits while striking out two over six innings. With the loss, Hedrick falls to 4-2 on the season.

Hedrick, sophomore third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee), Passaro, Netta, and senior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) each hit singles for Alfred. Lorraine Stoddard hit a three-run triple and Katie Fusco went 2-for-3 with a triple for Cortland.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 3, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against visiting Empire 8 foe Nazareth, at Hornell High School.
