AU women’s lacrosse team beats Hartwick in overtime, 14-13

ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team evened its Empire 8 Conference record with a 14-13 double-overtime overtime victory at Hartwick Saturday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) scored on an assist from senior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) 1:53 into the second extra three-minute session and Alfred (4-2, 1-1 Empire 8) held on for the win, rebounding from Friday’s conference opening loss at Stevens.

AU held a 6-5 lead at the half and was up 11-8 midway through the second before Hartwick netted four unanswered goals to take a 12-11 lead with just under nine minutes remaining. AU responded with two scores over 40 seconds to take a 13-12 lead with 7:32 left, but Hartwick’s Hannah Kennedy overtime with her fourth goal of the game, with just 37 seconds left in regulation.

Junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led AU with four goals and two assists. Tobin had two goals and three assists, while McGinnity, senior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and junior attack Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) each scored twice. Freshman midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) and senior midfielder Amanda Sullivan (Lexington, MA/Lexington) each scored a goal for Alfred.

Brittany LaVaute had three goals and three assists and Erin Doyle and Erica Scitcchitano each had two goals for Hartwick (1-5, 0-2 Empire 8).
Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) got the win in goal for AU, making 14 saves. Hartwick netminder Jen Kaye stopped nine Alfred shots.

Alfred is in action next on Monday, April 5, at 4 p.m. for a non-conference matchup against visiting Wells.
