Stevens defeats AU men’s lacrosse team, 10-4

HOBOKEN, NJ – Host Stevens broke open a tight game with six third-quarter goals, handing the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team a 10-4 setback Saturday afternoon.

Stevens (6-2, 2-0 Empire 8) led 2-1 after one period and 3-1 at the half. After AU closed to within two goals, 4-2, 42 second into the third, Stevens netted five unanswered to take a 9-2 advantage. The Ducks scored early in the fourth before Alfred closed out the game’s scoring with two goals in the final 7:31.

Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had two goals and junior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had two assists to lead Alfred (3-5, 0-2 Empire 8). Freshman attack Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) and freshman midfielder Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) each scored a goal for AU.

Alex Hofrichter has four goals and an assist for Stevens, which held a 34-24 advantage in gourndballs and won 11 of 18 face-offs. Alex Couture had two goals and Taylor Brown and Blair Koontz each had a goal and two assists for the Ducks.

Stevens goalie Dave Decker made nine saves for the win, while AU freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) stopped 13 shots.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m. at Elmira.
