Chamber Singers, Jazz Band plan spring evening performance in Knight Club
4/05/10

The Alfred University Chamber Singers and the AU Jazz Band will present a spring concert on Friday, April 30, at 8 p.m., in the Knight Club, Powell Campus Center. The performance is free and open to public.

The Chamber Singers, under the direction of Laurel Buckwalter, will perform a selection of jazz tunes including “In the Mood” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” Their repertoire will also include such Broadway as “Somewhere” from West Side Story, “All that Jazz” from Chicago, and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” from The Fantasticks.

Buckwalter is a music specialist and University carilloneur.

The Jazz Band, under the direction of Dr. Chris Foster, will perform the music of “Duke” Ellington and Charles Mingus, two jazz icons. Although their music is very different, the two had some strong connections. Bassist/composer Mingus had a successful solo career, but the two of them would often collaborate on recordings and performances.

Foster is director of bands and assistant professor of music at Alfred University. He directs the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Brass Choir, and teaches music theory and wind instrument lessons.
