ALFRED, NY — Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke), a junior on the Alfred University softball team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Pitcher of the Week. Cary was honored for her play last week, when she won both her starts: at ninth-ranked Cortland and at home against Empire 8 foe Nazareth.

She was the winning pitcher in a 5-3 victory over Cortland, which was called after five innings due to darkness. Cary allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out two. She tossed a two-hit shutout to complete a doubleheader sweep of Nazareth, striking out eight and walking one.

With the two wins, Cary improved her record to 7-0 and now has three shutouts (two of them no-hitters). For the season she has an earned run average of 1.32 and has struck out 44 batters while allowing opponents a .142 batting average. This week marks the second time this season Cary has been named Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week.

Alfred (12-2, 2-0) is in action next on Wednesday, April 7, at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader against visiting SUNY Oneonta, at Hornell High School.
