Lady Saxons lose double-OT decision to visiting Elmira

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team was defeated in double-overtime, 15-14, by the visiting Empire 8 foe Elmira College.

Senior defender Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell School) sent the game into extra time with a goal with two seconds left in regulation. Steen’s goal was assisted by senior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield).

AU led 14-13 at the end of the first overtime period after Steen scored her second goal with 38 seconds left in the first extra three-minute period. Elmira came out strong in the second overtime, with Jordan Donegan scoring the tying goal with 2:10 left Lindsay Mitchell netted the game-winner with 1:02 remaining.

At the half, Alfred (5-3, 1-2 Empire 8) trailed 6-5 and was outshot 16-12. AU scored eight goals after intermission, to Elmira’s seven, and outshot the Soaring Eagles, 18-16.

Junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a game-high seven goals and five ground balls to lead AU. Steen, junior attack Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) and senior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) (two assists) each netted two goals. Freshman attack Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) scored once and Tobin had a game-high five assists.

Mitchell scored six goals to pace Elmira (3-6, 1-2 Empire 8). Donegan netted three goals and Sarah Ware and Emma Schepers each had two goals. Meghan Pass and Emily Zimmerman each scored one goal.

Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made 11 saves in goal for Alfred, while Elmira goalie, Stephanie McClure, stopped 12 shots.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 10, at 4 p.m. at home against Nazareth.
