AU softball team splits with Oneonta

HORNELL, NY – The Alfred University softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Oneonta State Wednesday afternoon at Hornell High School.

AU won the first game, 3-2 in nine innings, before dropping the nightcap, 5-1.

In the opener, sophomore leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) singled leading off, reached third after a sacrifice and fielder’s choice, and scored with two outs on an Oneonta error. Netta’s run made a winner out of sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central), who improved to 5-2 on the season by allowed two unearned runs over nine innings, striking out three and walking two

Hedrick helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with her team-leading sixth homerun (a third-inning solo blast that tied the game at 2-2) and scoring twice. Sophomore third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run for Alfred (13-3, 2-0 Empire 8).

Jessica Iuliano took the pitching loss for Oneonta (9-8), allowing three runs (one unearned) in 8 2/3 innings. She allowed nine hits while striking out three and walking a pair.

In the nightcap, AU junior Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) and Oneonta Jessica Bartalsky were locked in a pitchers’ duel through five, with AU holding a slim 1-0 lead. Oneonta broke through in the top of the sixth when Sam Vincina hit a grand slam with no outs to give Oneonta a 4-1 advantage. The Red Dragons would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh to close out the game’s scoring.

Hedrick went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI for Alfred. Netta had a base hit and scored the Saxons’ lone run. Cary suffered her first loss in eight decisions, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and striking out eight.

Bartalsky earned the complete-game win for Oneonta, allowing an earned run on five hits, striking out one and walking five.

Alfred plays a pair of Empire 8 Conference doubleheaders on the road this weekend. The Saxons play at Ithaca at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 10, then take on Utica at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 11.
