Alfred University student musicians to present Sunday afternoon recital

The Alfred University Division of Performing Arts will present a student recital for woodwind, string, piano, and brass musicians on Sunday, April 18, at 3 p.m. in Room 301, Miller Performing Arts Center. Admission is open to the public free of charge.

A string quartet comprised of Dr. Lisa Lantz and students Kristen Kovatch on violin, Dana DiGiuseppe on viola, and Megan Mckee on cello will perform two movements of a Mozart string quartet, “Quartet in D Major.”

Lantz is associate professor of music/strings and chairman of the Performing Arts Department at AU. Kovatch is a senior English major from Lansdale, PA; DiGiuseppe is a senior art & design major from Albany; and McKee is a senior psychology and environmental studies major from Rush.

Student pianists Sharifa Barrow, Torrance Jones, and Liz Wager will perform popular and classical works. Other performers include trombonist Casey Dunphy, a sophomore materials science and engineering major from Queensbury; trumpeter Matt Phillips, a senior ceramic engineering major from Kinderhook, NY; flutist Emily Merkey, a senior business administration major from Walworth; clarinetists Valerie Boebinger, a sophomore art & design major from San Patricio, NM, and Jackie Kishbaugh; and oboist Geoffrey Cheung.

Recital pieces will include: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “I’ll Never Smile Again,” “Phantom of the Keys Diary,” “Nocturne in F Minor,” “Concerto in A Minor for Two Violins,” “Duo for Flute and Piano,” “Morceau Symphonique,” and “Concerto for Two Trumpets.”

The students in the recital are from the studios of Dr. Christopher Foster, director of bands/assistant professor of music; Laurel Buckwalter, music specialist and University carilloneur; Rebecca Weaver, adjunct professor in music; and Lantz. Buckwalter will serve as a piano accompanist for the recital.

Refreshments provided by the music faculty will be available for all following the program.
