Naz beats Lady Saxons, 21-8

ALFRED, NY — Visiting Nazareth College defeated the Alfred University women’s lacrosse team, 21-8, Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field.

AU (5-4, 1-2 Empire 8) scored the game’s first goal 51 seconds in, and held a 3-1 lead 7:57 into the contest, but Nazareth scored six unanswered to take a 7-3 advantage midway through the opening half. After Alfred scored at the 13:00 mark, Nazareth scored five of the next six goals of the half to take a 12-5 lead at intermission.

Alfred scored two of the first three goals of the second to draw within six goals, 13-7, but the visitors netted the next eight to put the game out of reach. Nazareth outshot AU, 48-16, and held a 37-24 edge in groundballs while winning 21 of 31 draws.

Senior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and freshman midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) each scored two goals for Alfred. Junior midfielder Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) had a goal and an assist, while junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and freshmen midfielders Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (four groundballs) and Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) each scored once.

Erinn Wood had nine points on five goals and four assists to lead Nazareth (6-4, 2-1 Empire 8). Stephanie Cash had two goals and five assists and Alyssa Johnston added four goals and an assist.

Ann Sessler got the win in goal for Nazareth, allowing seven goals and making one save in 43:23 of action. Shelby Robinson played the last 16:37 in net for the Golden Flyers and stopped two shots while allowing one goal. Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) went the distance in goal for Alfred and made 17 saves.

Alfred is in action next on Sunday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at home against RIT.
