AU outdoor track and field teams fare well at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – The Alfred University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed Saturday at the Slippery Rock University Invitational meet. There were no team scores.

Sophomore Eisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, MA/Watertown) paced the AU women's team with a win in the 10,000-meter run (41:29.91). Sophomores Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) and Justin Shardlow (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) led the Alfred men’s team. Scott was second in the 400-meter dash (50.18 seconds) and third in the 200-meter dash (22.71 seconds); Shardlow was second in the long jump (5.87 meters) and third in the 100-meter dash (11.80 seconds).

Freshman Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) was third in the long jump (5.86 meters) and fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.82 seconds); freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) was seventh in the 200-meter dash (23.56 seconds) and eighth in the 400 meters (52.08 seconds); sophomore Derek Echevarria (New York, NY/Cardinal Hayes) was eighth in the 100-meter dash (12.35 seconds); senior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) and sophomore Derek Denkenberger (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) were fifth (4:15.77) and ninth (4:27.75), respectively, in the 1,500-meter run; senior Ned Lessig (Reading, PA/Reading) was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.82 seconds); Cory Essington was fifth in the long jump (5.62 meters) and third in the triple jump (11.40 meters); senior Travis Cox (Westerly, RI/Ashaway) and junior Markenson Joseph (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional) were third (44.35 meters) and fifth (39.85 meters), respectively, in the hammer throw; and freshman Eric Shormann (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) was 10th in the 10,000-meter run.

The AU men’s team of Lopez, Weaver, Shardlow and Scott placed second in the 4X100-meter relay.

Freshman Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly) was sixth in the hammer throw for the Alfred women, breaking her own school record with a throw of 41.17 meters. She had originally set the school mark of 37.30 meters at the season-opening meet at Ithaca.

Senior Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.67); senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) was eighth in the 1,500-meter run (5:25.33); junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga) and freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell) were eighth (2:32.99) and ninth (2:34.08), respectively, in the 800-meter run; and freshman Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Allendale-Ciolumbia) was ninth in the 100-meter dash (13.89 seconds) and 200-meter dash (28.19 seconds).

The team of Morrissey, freshman Gabby Rinaldi (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood), Gaylord and Larkins took fifth in the 4X100-meter relay (55.50 seconds); Gaylord, Crimmins, Haahr and Morrissey took fourth in the 4X400-meter relay (4:27.49).

AU is in action next on Monday, April 12, at Alfred State College.
