AU softball team splits with Ithaca
In the second game, Alfred (14-4, 3-1 Empire 8) trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) led off with a triple and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee). The Saxons loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh and won when freshman pinch runner Erin Johnston (West Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored after Hedrick reached on an error.
Junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) improved to 8-1 with the complete-game win for AU. She allowed two runs (one unearned) on seven hits and struck out three. Senior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) had two hits for the Saxons, and senior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) drove in a run.
Alyssa Brook took the pitching loss for Ithaca, allowing an unearned run on two hits. She pitched in relief of starter Brittany Lillie, who allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out five in six innings. First baseman Kerry Barger had two hits and an RBI and third baseman Allison Greaney hit a run-scoring double for the Bombers.
In the first game, Ithaca (12-8, 3-1 Empire 8) took a 5-0 lead after two innings, knocking out AU starter Hedrick after 1 1/3 innings. Hedrick was lifted with one out in the second and allowed five earned runs on eight hits and a walk. Cary relieved Hedrick and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Alfred. Junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) hit a solo homerun and senior centerfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) had a hit and drove in a run.
Brook earned the complete game win for Ithaca, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out six. First baseman Caitlin Ryan was 2-for-2 with three RBIs for the Bombers. Centerfielder Annmarie Forenza was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two driven in and catcher Katherine Wilson scored two runs.
Alfred is in returns to the diamond Sunday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Empire 8 foe Utica College.
