Saxon men’s lacrosse team drops 14-11 decision to Elmira

ELMIRA, NY – Host Elmira College defeated the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team, 14-11, in an Empire 8 Conference matchup Saturday afternoon.

The game was tied at 5-5 after one quarter and Elmira held a two-goal lead, 10-8, at halftime. The host Soaring Eagles led 14-11 after three and held on to win as both teams went scoreless in the final quarter.

AU (3-6, 0-3 Empire 8) trailed early, as Elmira scored three of the first four goals, but the Saxons came back, scoring four unanswered to take their only lead of the game, 5-3. Elmira (5-5, 1-2 Empire 8) then scored five straight in an 8:33 span of the first and second quarter to take an 8-5 advantage. Alfred pulled to within two with a pair of goals late in the second quarter by freshman midfielder Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) but could get no closer.
Johnston finished with four goals to lead AU. Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had two goals and two assists and junior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had four assists. Senior midfielder Sean Roberts (Whitney Point, NY/Whiney Point) added two goals for the Saxons.

Rick Acorn led Elmira with four goals and an assist and T.J. White added three goals.

Freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) made six saves for Alfred. Geoffrey Lane played 28:41 in net for Elmira and made one save while allowing eight goals. Dave Bucchino played the final 31:19 in goal, made six saves and allowed three goals.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 17, at 4 p.m. at home against Utica.
