AU softball team sweeps Utica; Olivieri earns 100th coaching win

UTICA, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept host Utica in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon, giving Gino Olivieri his 100th career coaching victory.

Alfred (16-4, 5-1 Empire 8) won the opener, 9-6 in nine innings, rallying to tie the game in the sixth, then plating four in the ninth. In the second game, the Saxons won, 10-3. Olivieri reached the milestone in only his fifth season at the Saxons’ helm; after Sunday’s sweep, his career record at AU stands at 100-65.

In the first game, Alfred trailed 4-3 when the Saxons tied the game with a run in the sixth. Each team scored a run in the eighth and the game went to the ninth tied 5-5. In the top of the ninth, Alfred scored four times then held Utica to a run in the bottom half of the inning. Senior centerfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) struck the big blow in the inning, smashing a two-run double with the bases loaded and two outs to make it 9-5. Sophomore leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) and junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) each hit run-scoring singles before Mather’s hit.

Cary earned the pitching win in relief of sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central), allowing two unearned runs on three hits and striking out three in four innings. Hedrick went five innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Mather finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs and Netta was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Hedrick hit a double and scored a run and freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) was 3-for-4 with three doubles, two RBIs and a run.

Cary earned the pitching win in the second game, going the distance and allowing three runs (one unearned) on 10 hits and striking out five. With the win, Cary improved to 10-1 on the season (4-0 Empire 8). AU scored one run in each of the first two innings before sending 11 batters to the plate in the third and breaking the game open with seven runs.

Freshman second baseman Kassandra Corsi (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South) went 2-for-2 with a homerun, double, three runs scored and two RBIs to pace the AU offense. Hedrick was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs; sophomore designated hitter Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) hit a two-run double and scored a run; and junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Alfred is in action next on Thursday, April 15, for a 3 p.m. non-league doubleheader against visiting Keuka College.
