Two AU riders compete at Zone II show; Moore qualifies to compete at nationals

CAZENOVIA, NY — Johanna Moore (Summit, NY/Morristown-Beard), a junior on the Alfred University English equestrian team, has qualified to compete in next month’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) national championships.

Moore was one of two AU riders who rode in Saturday’s IHSA Zone II championships at Cazenovia College. She took first place in novice equitation on the flat and qualified to compete in that event at the ISHA national championships May 6-9 in Lexington, KY. The top two riders in each zone championship show move on to compete at nationals.

Moore also competed in novice equitation over fences — the event in which she won a Zone II, Region II, title on March 20 — and did not place. Her teammate, junior Barbara Koziol (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden), competed in intermediate equitation over fences on Saturday and placed eighth.

Moore becomes the first AU rider to qualify for nationals in hunt seat competition since Caitin Hartman placed second in walk-trot-canter in 2007. The Saxons’ Katie Mix also competed at nationals that year, in the Western division. Alfred competed as a team at the 2008 IHSA Western championships; Mix and Kelsey Coggiola earned individual ribbons at the national show that year. Kristen Kovatch (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), a senior this year, competed at last season’s IHSA Western national championships.
