AU outdoor track and field teams place first at Alfred State

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams each placed first in a tri-meet hosted by Alfred State College Monday afternoon.

The AU men took first with 146 points, a head of runner-up Alfred State (112.5 points) and third-place Houghton (53 points). Alfred’s women scored 127 points to defeat runner-up Houghton (104) and third-place Alfred State (76).

Freshman Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly) earned two wins to lead the AU women. The took first place in the shot put (10.35 meters) and hammer throw (38.52 meters) and also placed third in the javelin 24.12 meters. In the season’s first four meets, Moorehead has turned in the best three marks in school history in the hammer throw, twice setting new school records.

Also earning wins for the AU women were freshman Gabby Rinaldi (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) in the 100-meter hurdles (19.94 seconds) and senior Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horsheads) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.16). The team of freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell), Rinaldi, Gaylord and freshman Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Allendale-Columbia) won the 4X100-meter relay (43.14 seconds).

Other top performers for the Alfred women were: Larkins, second in the 100-meter dash (13.29 seconds) and long jump (4.46 meters); Gaylord, second in the 200-meter dash (29.60 seconds); senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads), second in the 1,500-meter run (5:07.70); Morrissey, third in the 400-meter run (1:03.28); sophomore Annie Mills (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough), second in the 100-meter hurdles (20.24 seconds); junior Jen Chan (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley), second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:20.54); freshman Kelly-Jo Beck (York, NY/York), second in the shot put (9.41 meters), discus (29.68 meters) and javelin (24.66 meters); and freshman Kirstin Cook (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East), third in the shot put (9.17 meters).

Sophomore Rich Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) was a double-winner for the AU men’s team, taking first in the 200-meter dash (23.14 seconds) and 400-meter run (50.53 seconds). He also teamed with freshman Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and sophomore Justin Shardlow (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) to win the 4X100-meter relay (44.19 seconds). Senior Travis Cox (Westerly, RI/Ashaway) also won two events: the discus (38.62 meters) and the hammer throw (45.52 meters).

Shardlow won the 100-meter dash (11.54 seconds) and was second in the long jump (5.97 meters). Other event winners for the Alfred men were: senior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) in the 800-meter run (1:59.40); Lopez in the long jump (6.01 meters); junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) in the shot put (13.87 meters); and Cory Essington in the triple jump (11.60 meters).

Other top performers for the AU men were: Weaver, third in the 200-meter dash (23.64 seconds); sophomore Randy Brito (New York, NY/Cardinal Hayes), third in the 400 meters (54.49 seconds); sophomore Derek Denkenberger (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), third in the 1,500-meter run (4:19.40); Cody Gleason and sophomore Mitchell Schrechengost (Falconer, NY/Falconer), second (58.38 seconds) and third (1:01.14), respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles); Schrechengost, second in the javelin (41.58 meters); Ross in the discus (35.48 meters); and junior Markenson Joseph (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Academy), second in the hammer throw (41.64 meters).

The AU men and women are in action next on Saturday, April 17, at the Empire 8 Conference outdoor championships, hosted by RIT.
