AU women’s basketball team hands out season awards

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s basketball team recently named its award-winners for the 2009-10 season.

Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) a junior point guard, was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. Murphy was named a First Team Empire 8 Conference all-star after leading the team in scoring (15 points per game, third in the Empire 8), assists (2.6 per game, 10th in the league) and free-throw shooting (81.2 percent, fourth in the Empire 8). Her 2.44 three-point field goals made per game led the Empire 8. Murphy, the only First Team Empire 8 all-star in team history, also earned First Team all-conference honors last year.

Senior forward Libby Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) was named team Defensive Player of the Year. Meier, a four-year letterwinner, was second on the team in steals (33), rebounds (5.1 per game) and blocks (13). Her 81 defensive rebounds (3.24 per contest) led the team. She also averaged four points and one assist per game.

Senior forward Alysha Dias (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) was named the team’s Most Improved Player. A starter in 24 of 25 games, Dias averaged 5.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game and had 18 steals and eight blocks. Her 42.1 percent field goal shooting percentage was best on the team for players seeing action in more than half the team’s games.

Senior forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) and senior guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) were named recipients of the Spark Plug Award. Meier, a four-year letterwinner, averaged 5.3 points and 3.8 rebounds and led the team with 29 blocked shots. Button, also a four-year letterwinner, averaged 4.6 points and was third on the team in three-point shots made (18).

Senior forward Danielle Cooper (Reading, PA/Reading) received the Spirit Award. Cooper, a four-year letterwinner, averaged 2.8 points and 3.1 rebounds while seeing action in 22 games. She was also the team’s recipient of the Empire 8 Conference’s Sportsmanship Award.
