Utica women’s lacrosse team defeats AU, 10-7

ALFRED, NY – Visiting Utica College defeated Alfred University, 10-7, in Empire 8 Conference women’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field.

AU (5-7, 1-6 Empire 8) scored the game’s first three goals and held a 4-1 lead with 11:15 left in the opening half, but Utica (5-6, 3-4 Empire 8) netted four of the next five and the game was tied at 5-5 heading into halftime intermission.

The visitors scored the first three goals of the second half to take an 8-5 advantage 10:31 in. Alfred scored the next two to draw within a goal, at 8-7, with 10:34 remaining, but Utica tallied a pair, the second coming with 3:31 remaining, to close out the game’s scoring. Utica outshot AU, 23-16, and had 12 draw controls to six for Alfred. The Saxons held a slim 30-26 advantage in groundballs, but had 47 fouls to 25 for the Pioneers. Both teams turned the ball over 27 times.

Junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored three goals to lead Alfred, while senior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) added two. Senior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had an assist, giving her 73 for her career, which ties an AU school career record. Junior attack Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) and freshman midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) each scored one goal for Alfred.

Tammy Kohanski scored six goals and assisted on one to pace the Pioneers. Maria Santucci had a goal and two assists.

Junior goalie Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made seven saves in net for Alfred, while Utica netminder Shelby Barbay stopped five shots.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 21, at 7 p.m. at Marywood University.
