Utica defeats AU men’s lacrosse team, 10-8

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team was defeated by visiting Utica, 10-8, Saturday afternoon.

Alfred (3-7, 0-4 Empire 8) led 4-2 after one period and trailed 6-4 at the half. Utica scored four unanswered goals in the second quarter and Alfred was unable to take the lead again in the second half. For the game, Utica outshot Alfred 39-34, but Alfred led in groundballs picking up 40 to Utica’s 31.

Junior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) led the Saxons with three goals and had one assist. Senior midfielder Sean Roberts (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point (Broome CC) and sophomore midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) each scored netted two goals and freshman attack Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) scored one goal. Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had two assists and junior defender Trent Thurston (Ontario, NY/Webster Schroeder) picked up a game-high seven groundballs.

Pete Schneider netted a game-high five goals and had one assist to pace Utica (4-7, 2-2 Empire 8). Corey Boulio scored two goals and one assist and Tanner Stewart, Kevin Conway and Michael Brodhead each scored one goal. Andrew Waite had a game-high three assists.

Freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) had 12 saves in goal for Alfred while Travis Wright had 13 saves in goal for Utica.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 21, at 4 p.m. at RIT.
