AU outdoor track and field teams compete at Empire 8 championships

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed Saturday at the Empire 8 Conference championship meet. The AU men finished fourth of six teams competing, while the Alfred women placed fifth of six teams.

Junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) earned the only title for either AU team, winning the men’s shot put (13.77 meters). He also placed fourth in the discus (36.39 meters).

Other top performers for the Alfred men were: senior Travis Cox (Westerly, RI/Ashaway), fifth in the discus (36.38 meters) and fourth in the hammer throw (42.40 meters); sophomore Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden), third in the 400-meter dash (50.24 seconds) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.13 seconds).

The Alfred men's 4X400-meter relay team of seniors Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) and Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and Scott placed second with a time of 3:27.74.

Freshmen Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly) and Kelly-Jo Beck (York, NY/York) led the AU women, each with third-place finishes: Moorehead in the hammer throw (40.34 meters) and Beck in the discus (29.79 meters).

Other AU women’s team members earning top-five finishes were: senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads), fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5:04.27); sophomore Elisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, MA/Watertown), fifth in the 5,000-meter run (19:41.67); freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell), fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:04.33) and fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.77 seconds); and freshman Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Allendale-Columbia), fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.38 seconds).

Alfred is in action next on Thursday and Friday, April 22 and 23, at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
The AU men and women compete Sunday, April 25, at the Cornell Invitational.
