Alfred University softball team earns sweep of Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept a non-league doubleheader from host Cazenovia Tuesday afternoon. The Saxons took the first game, 9-2, then handed the Wildcats a 20-1 five-inning defeat in the nightcap.

In the opener, AU scored two in the first and Cazenovia answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame before Alfred (20-4) broke the game open with a pair of runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth. Junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) had two hits, including a double, and drove in four to pace the Saxons’ offensive attack. Sophomore designated player Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) hit a pair of doubles, had on RBI and scored a run; sophomore third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) scored three runs; and sophomore leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) went 2-for-4.

Sophomore pitcher Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) improved to 9-3 with the complete-game win. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out 11. Hedrick helped herself at the plate, hitting a double and scoring twice.

AU belted out 20 hits in the second game, with Shepherd (two doubles) and Ewoldt (homerun, two doubles, six RBIs) each going 4-for-5. Ewoldt and Shepherd each scored five runs to tie the AU school single-game record, first set by three Saxons in a 1999 game against Hilbert. Alfred scored multiple runs in each inning Tuesday, and held a 14-1 lead after three innings.

Hedrick went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored; freshman second baseman Kassandra Corsi (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South) drove in four runs; freshman outfielder Laura Haas (Buffalo, NY/Immaculata) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs; and freshman catcher Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) hit a double and scored twice.

Junior Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) got the pitching win for Alfred, improving to 11-1 on the season. She allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out 11 over five innings.

AU is in action next on Thursday, April 22, with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Hornell High School against visiting D’Youville.
