AU men’s lacrosse falls to RIT, 18-9

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team was defeated by RIT, 18-9, Wednesday afternoon.

Alfred (3-8, 0-5 Empire 8) trailed 11-5 at the half after being outshot 19-14. For the game, RIT outshot Alfred, 41-28, and led in groundballs, picking up 38 to Alfred’s 26.

Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) netted three goals to lead AU. Freshman attack Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) and sophomore midfielder Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) each scored two goals and sophomore midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) and freshman midfielder Matt Hodnik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) each scored one goal. Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) had a team-high two assists and junior midfielder Kevin Kostyk (Islamorada, FL/Sencea (NJ)) picked up a team-high five groundballs.

Kelso Davis scored a game-high five goals and had two assists to pace RIT (9-5, 4-2 Empire 8). Adam Vlassis netted three goals and Jordan Collins-Hartw scored two goals. Sean Gillies, Doug Hemink, Tanner King, Alex Crepinsek, Adam Lehmann, Tom Riley, David Burke and Mike Barilla each scored one goal and Jerry Ragonese picked up a game-high eight groundballs.

Freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) played 45:00 in goal for Alfred, making seven saves and allowing 15 goals. Freshman Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played the remaining time in goal, making three saves and allowing three goals. Robert Tonnessen played the first 45:00 in goal for RIT, making eight saves and allowing seven goals and Kevin Rattigan played the remaining time in goal, making four saves and allowing two goals.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 24, at 12 p.m. vs. St. John Fisher.
