Fisher defeats AU women’s lacrosse team

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team was defeated by St. John Fisher, 12-11, Sunday afternoon in their last home game of the season.

Fisher (4-11, 3-5 Empire 8) led 7-6 at the half. The Lady Saxons outshot the Cardinals, 17-14, in the first period and picked up 13 groundballs to Fisher’s 10. Fisher came out in the second half and scored two quick goals (29:02 and 28:09) to increase their lead to 9-6. Alfred then went on a scoring run and netted four unanswered goals within seven minutes to take a 10-9 lead with just under 21 minutes remaining. The Cardinals answered with three straight to take a 12-10 lead before the Lady Saxons scored the game’s final goal with 10:01 left. For the game, both teams had 28 shots and Alfred led in groundballs, 29-25.

Junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY /Horseheads), junior midfielder Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) (one assist) and freshman midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) (four groundballs) each scored three goals to lead AU (6-8, 1-7 Empire 8). Senior defender Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell School) and senior midfielder Amanda Sullivan (Lexington, MA/Lexington) both netted one goal. Sophomore defender Hanna Scott (Braintree, VT/Randolph Union) picked up a game-high five groundballs and senior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had a game-high two assists.

Lauren Glavin scored a game-high six goals and had one assist to pace the Cardinals. Mary Stimson scored three goals and had two assists and Trish Scudder, Whitney Mirabito and Courtney Clare each scored one goal.

Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made 9 saves in goal for Alfred and Vicki Sahm made 11 saves in goal for St. John Fisher.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, April 27, at 4 p.m. at Morrisville.
