AU women’s lacrosse team wins season finale, 21-7, at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, NY — The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team won its 2010 season finale Tuesday afternoon, beating host Morrisville 21-7.

AU (7-8) led 15-1 at the half and coasted to the win as both teams tallied six goals after intermission. The Saxons got six goals and one assist from senior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and five goals from junior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads).

The five goals give Adams 55 for the year, which is the third most in a single season at AU. Senior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield), who earlier this year set the career record for assists, had six more, giving her 84 for her career. Tobin, who set the single-game assists record (eight) last season, finished this year with 36 assists, a new school single-season mark.

Freshman midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had three goals and an assist Tuesday, while senior midfielder Amanda Sullivan (Lexington, MA/Lexington) had two. Junior attack Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) added three assists.

Jamie Anderson led Morrisville (5-10) with three goals and Carmen Velazquez had two goals and an assist.

Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made eight saves in goal for Alfred, while Morrisville goalie Allison Strub stopped nine shots.
