AU softball team sets school wins record with doubleheader sweep of Elmira
With the 3-0 and 12-1 victories, AU improved to 28-4 on the year (9-1 Empire 8), breaking the school mark for wins (27) set last year and running its winning streak to 15 games.
In the opener, AU broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth before adding an insurance run an inning later. Sophomore pitcher Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) tossed her third shutout of the year to improve to 14-3. She allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked four.
Freshman second baseman Kassandra Corsi (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South) went 2-for-2, belting a two-run double with one out in the fifth to score what would be the winning run. Junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) hit and RBI single in the sixth, while junior third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) (2-for-2), freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) (1-for-3) and sophomore leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) (1-for-2) each scored a run.
Casandra Fontinell took the pitching loss for Elmira, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out four over six innings. Second baseman Jacqueline Gibson and first baseman Stephany Fontinell each hit a double for Elmira.
In the second game, stopped after five innings, junior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) allowed one earned run on three hits, striking out eight and walking none to improve to 14-1 on the season.
Passaro had a homerun and a double in three at bats, drove in three and scored a run for the Saxons. Shepherd was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs; Hedrick hit two doubles, drove in two runs and scored one; sophomore designated player Shanna Ewaldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) had two RBIs and scored twice; and Fenton went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
Katie Hobson took the loss for Elmira, allowing four hits and six earned runs in two innings. Stephany Fontinell pitched three innings of relief and allowed six earned runs on eight hits, striking out three. Centerfielder Brittnee McGuire hit a run-scoring triple for the Soaring Eagles, who fall to 13-6 (6-6 Empire 8).
Alfred wraps up its regular season with a pair of conference doubleheaders this weekend at home: Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. against Stevens and Sunday, May 2, at 1 p.m. against St. John Fisher.
