Softball team to play rescheduled games this weekend
HORNELL, NY -- The Alfred University softball team will wrap up its regular season with two home Empire 8 Conference doubleheaders this weekend, both make-ups of games postponed earlier because of poor weather.
The Saxons take on Stevens Institute of Technology for a pair of games on Friday, April 30, starting at 3 p.m., then play host to St. John Fisher for a twinbill on Sunday, May 2, beginning at 1 p.m. The games, played at Hornell High School, had originally been scheduled for April 17 and April 25, respectively.
Alfred is 28-4 (9-1 Empire 8) after Wednesday's doubleheader sweep of Elmira has now won 15 straight since a doubleheader split at Empire 8 rival Ithaca on April 10. The team's 28 wins are a new school single-season record, breaking the mark of 27 set last year.
AU, second in the Northeast in the latest NCAA Division III regional rankings, is in second place in the Empire 8 standings, behind Ithaca (11-1 Empire 8). Ithaca wraps up its conference schedule with two games at Elmira on Saturday.
The Saxons have clinched a berth in the four-team Empire 8 championship tournament, the winner of which earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA championships. AU could be seeded first, second or third in the double-elimination tournament, depending on the results of this weekend's games.
