AU track and field teams compete at state outdoor meet

TROY, NY -- The Alfred University men's and women's track and field teams completed the first day of competition Friday at the New York State outdoor championships, hosted by RPI.

The AU men's team was in seventh place and the Alfred women were in ninth after the first day of action at the two-day meet, which concludes Saturday.

The AU men's team of sophomore Derek Denkenberger (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), seniors Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) and Matt Phillips (KInderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), and sophomore Ken Noll (Valetie, NY/Ichabod Crane) were sixth in the 4X800-meter relay (8:05.42). Freshman Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) was 10th in the long jump (5.91 meters) and junior Markenson Joseph (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional) was 13th in the hammer throw (36.06 meters).

For the Alfred women, seniors Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) and Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga) and freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell) were eighth in the 4X800-meter relay (10:01.84). Sophomore Elisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, MA/Watertown) was 10th in the 10,000-meter run (40:20.92) and freshman Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly) was 10th in the hammer throw (39.06 meters).
