Saxons come up short against Hartwick, 10-8

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team was defeated by Hartwick, 10-8, Saturday afternoon in their season finale.

Alfred (3-11, 0-8 Empire 8) trailed 5-1 at the half after being outshot 26-7. In the third quarter, the Saxons came out strong with a quick goal scored by sophomore attack James Cahill (Sugar Land, TX/Clements) followed by three straight goals netted by senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) to tie the game up 5-5 with 8:25 remaining in the third. Alfred and Hartwick went on to score one more goal each to bring the score to 6-6 heading into the fourth. Saxons were able to score two more goals in the game while Hartwick netted four more.

For the game, Hartwick outshot Alfred, 51-31 while Alfred led in groundballs, picking up 38 to Hartwick’s 29.

Russo paced the Saxons with three goals. Cahill, junior midfielder Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) (team-high five groundballs), freshman midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home), freshman midfielder Matt Hodnik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton), and sophomore midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham) each scored one goal.

Harry Hughes and Dave Aitchison (three assists) each netted three goals to lead Hartwick (6-8, 2-6 Empire 8). Joe Shields scored two goals and Steve Kuron and Brandon Wilk each scored one goal.

Freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) had 19 saves in goal for Alfred and Ryan Twardowski had six saves in goal for Hartwick.
