AU men sixth, women’s team ninth, at state outdoor track championships
Junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) led the AU men at the two-day meet, hosted by RPI. He won a state title in the shot put (14.13 meters) and was runner-up in the discus (40.49 meters). Also scoring points for the Saxon men were: senior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), second in the 800-meter run (1:56.21); sophomore Rich Scott (Eden, NY/Eden), fourth in the 400-meter dash (49.64 seconds) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.16 seconds); and senior Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), seventh in the 800-meter run (1:58.86).
Both Alfred men’s relay teams picked up points by on Saturday. The team of freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic), Scott, sophomore Randy Brito (New York, NY/Cardinal Hayes) and Cody Gleason were fourth in the 4X100-meter relay (43.95); and Weaver, Scott, Consolo and Phillips were fourth in the 4X400-meter relay (3:23.30).
Other top performers for the AU men included: Weaver, 10th in the 400-meter dash (50.83 seconds); senior Jesse Schuster (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda), 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:34.42); and Gleason, 12th in the 400-meter hurdles (59.68 seconds).
The Alfred women’s team was paced Saturday by its 4X100-meter relay. Junior Jen Chan (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley), freshmen Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly) and Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Allendale-Columbia), and senior Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) took fifth with a time of 52.28 seconds. Freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell, junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga), Gaylord and senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) placed eighth in the 4X400-meter relay (4:19.00) to pick up points for the Saxons.
Other top performers for the Saxon women were: Morrissey, 10th in the 400-meter dash (1:03.07); Moorehead, 11th in the javelin (27.45 meters) and shot put (9.82 meters); freshman Kirstin Cook (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East), 13th in the discus (25.35 meters); Larkins and Morrissey, ninth (13.47 seconds) and 11th (13.62 seconds), respectively, in the 100-meter dash; Crimmins, 13th in the 1,500-meter run (4:59.47); Haahr, 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:54.65); and Gaylord, 14th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.18).
The AU men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Friday, May 7, at Roberts Wesleyan.
