AU men’s soccer team falls to Hobart

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s soccer team dropped its 2010 season opener, 6-0, to visiting Hobart College Wednesday night on Merrill Field.

The visiting Statesmen got on the board 17:40 into the opening half on an Evan Grey goal, assisted by Kevin McCarthy. Hobart scored with just under five minutes left before intermission when McCarthy tallied the first of his two goals, assisted by Shayan Mosavi. Hobart outshot Alfred, 11-4 in the first half and held a 20-6 advantage for the game.

McCarthy netted his second goal at the 68:19 mark, assisted by Will Abbott. The Statesmen also got second-half goals from Alex Kittelberger, Andrew Malordy and Abbott, who finished with two assists.

Junior goalie Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) played 81 minutes in net, allowed six goals and making eight saves for Alfred (0-1-0). Freshman Samuel Guy (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) played the final nine minutes and made one save.

Charlie Hale started in goal for Hobart (1-0-0) and made two saves in 83 minutes of action. Stephen Bruening played the last seven minutes in net and didn’t face a shot.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, Sept. 3, at 5:30 p.m. against Grove City in a first-round game at the Oswego State Tournament. Sage plays Oswego in Friday’s other first-round game, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s consolation is at 1 p.m. and the championship match is at 3 p.m.
