Saxons advance to final of Oswego men’s soccer tournament

OSWEGO, NY — The Alfred University men’s soccer team advanced to the championship of the Oswego State Tournament after earning a 1-1 first-round tie with Grove City Friday evening. AU defeated Grove City 4-2 on penalty kicks to advance to Saturday’s title game, where the Saxons will take on host Oswego at 3 p.m.

Grove City got on the board first with a goal from Jake Kern 21:40 into the game. Alfred answered Kern’s goal when freshman midfielder Zachary Kranefield (Millville, NJ/Millville) scored on an assist from senior defender Nick Schneider (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) at the 74:39 minute mark.

After a scoreless 10-minute overtime period, the game went to penalty kicks. AU got shootout goals from sophomore forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY Elmira Free Academy) and junior forward Ean Kelleher (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) to take a 2-1 advantage. Alfred sophomore goalie Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/ Thunder Ridge) stopped Grove City’s next attempt and junior midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) scored to put Alfred up 3-1. Grove City answered to make it 3-2 before sophomore forward Rigel Johnson (Little Valley, NY/Cattarugus-Little Valley) scored the fourth and final goal of the shootout. The game ended with Thorpe stopping Grove City’s fourth attempt.

Thorpe went the distance in goal for Alfred, making six saves., while Chris Burgan made three saves for Grove City. With the win Alfred improved to 0-1-1 on the season and Grove City dropped to 0-0-1.
