9/04/10

OSWEGO, NY – The Alfred University men’s soccer team won the Oswego State Tournament, defeating the host team 2-1 in Saturday’s championship match. AU sophomore forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) scored both the Saxons’ goals and was named tournament MVP.

Mannino opened the scoring at the 22:39 mark of the first half on an assist from sophomore midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock). Oswego tied the game 1:19 later on a goal by Dean Gaetano, assisted by Brandon Carnovale.

The game remained tied until Mannino netted the game-winner 11:25 into the second half on an assist from freshman midfielder Zachary Kranefeld (Millville, NJ/Millville).

Oswego outshot Alfred, 10-2, but both AU shots found the back of the net. Junior Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) made two saves in goal for Alfred and was named to the all-tournament team. Oswego netminder Mat Wopperer had no saves.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. at Pitt-Bradford.
