Alfred, Potsdam winners in first day at AU women’s soccer tournament

ALFRED, NY – Host Alfred University and SUNY Potsdam were winners in Saturday’s first day of action at the AU Women’s Soccer Invitational tournament. Potsdam defeated Hilbert, 7-0, in the first game, before Alfred knocked off Pitt-Bradford, 2-0.

Potsdam will play Pitt-Bradford at 3 p.m. in Sunday’s first contest; Alfred will play Hilbert at 6 p.m.

In its win over Pitt-Bradford, Alfred jumped out to a quick lead, with junior midfielder Alicia Schuler (Elba, NY/Elba) tallying an unassisted goal 28 seconds into the game. Senior forward Erin Crandall (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) scored on an assist from senior forward Liz Graham (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) at the 13:57 mark and the Saxons led 2-0 at halftime.

AU outshot Pitt-Bradford 18-7 and held an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalie Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) made four saves to earn the shutout for AU, while Pitt-Bradford’s Alisa Cornell stopped nine shots.

In the early game, Potsdam got two goals each from Kathleen Frear and Ashley Thayer and a goal and two assists from Jess Mehm. The Bears held a 2-0 lead at the half before exploding for five goals after intermission. Thayer’s goals came within 20 seconds of each other late in the second half. Taylor Jordan had a goal and an assist and Heather Johnson also added a goal.

Caitlin Titus made five saves in goal to earn the shutout for Potsdam, which outshot Hilbert 19-9. Hilbert goalie Mary Zinni made nine saves.
