Saxons, Potsdam unbeaten at AU women’s soccer tournament 9/05/10
Alfred opened the scoring against Hilbert on an unassisted goal by senior forward Liz Graham (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) 10:52 into the game. Junior defender Kaitlyn Ross (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) scored an unassisted goal from 40 yards out with just over 16 minutes left in the half and AU led 2-0 at intermission. Hilbert pulled to within a goal with just over 33 minutes left in the second half when Alyssa Hulbert converted a penalty kick. Alfred outshot Hilbert, 20-5, and had eight shots on goal to the Hawks’ three. Senior Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) made two saves in goal for Alfred, while Hilbert netminder Mary Zinni stopped six shots. In the opening game, Alissa Tischler scored the game-winning goal, unassisted, just under 15 minutes into the second half. The Bears added a second score on a Pitt-Bradford own goal with 9:27 left and the Bears held on for the win. Potsdam outshot Pitt-Bradford, 18-4 and held an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. Kim Callahan made three saves in goal for Potsdam (2-0-0). Pitt-Bradford (0-3-0) got 10 saves from goalkeeper Alisa Cornell. On Saturday, Potsdam defeated Hilbert, 7-0, and AU topped Pitt-Bradford, 2-0. All-tournament selections were: Graham and junior defender Kristen Bartiss (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) from Alfred; Alyssa Hulbert and Amber Grosch from Hilbert; Vicky DeLong and Alex Snellbaker from Pitt-Bradford; Stephanie Simons and Kathleen Frear (two goals in Saturday’s win over Hilbert) from Potsdam. Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at home against Elmira. |
