Late goal gives Saxons 5-4 victory at Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, PA -- Senior midfielder Mark Nesbitt (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) scored with just more than a minute remaining in regulation to give The Alfred University men's soccer team a thrilling 5-4 win over host Pitt-Bradford Wednesday afternoon.

Nesbitt scored with 1:10 left on an assist from sophomore forward Stefan Nonnenmann (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) as the Saxons overcame four goals from Pitt-Bradford's Toby Abdul-Razaq. With the win, AU improves to 2-1-1 on the season.

Alfred opened the scoring two minutes into the game when junior midfielder Cory Hill (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) scored on a header, assisted by sophomore midfielder Sam Miller (Kinsman, OH/Badger).

Five minutes later, Abdul-Razaq scored the equalizer and would wind up netting three straight during a nine-minute span of the first half, giving his team a 3-1 lead. Alfred responded, with freshman forward Thomas Esposito (Farmingdale, NY/Kellenburg) scoring on an assist fronm junior forward Ean Kelleher (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh). Kelleher then tallied an unassisted goal to knot the contest at 3-3.

Just before halftime, AU sophomore forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) was taken down in the box and AU was awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) converted and the Saxons took a 4-3 lead into halftime.

The second half remained scoreless until about six minutes remaining, when Abdul-Razaq tied it, setting the stage for Nesbitt's late-game heroics.

AU junior Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) made three saves in goal for Alfred.

The Saxons are in action next on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. at home against Marywood.
