AU volleyball team drops pair at Empire 8 tournament

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University volleyball team lost both matches it played Saturday in first-day action at the Empire 8 Conference crossover tournament.

The Saxons (5-7, 0-2 Empire 8) lost to tournament host RIT 3-1 (25-11, 25-8, 28-30, 25-11) and then fell in three games to Nazareth (25-8, 25-19, 25-16).

Against RIT, Alfred was led by junior Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) with seven kills, a service ace, and seven digs. Freshman Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had seven assists and freshman Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had eight.

Freshman Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had six kills, five digs and block in the Nazareth match. Barone had five assists and freshman Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had a team-leading eight digs.

Alfred plays two tournament games on Sunday: at 12:30 p.m. against Elmira and at 3 p.m. against St. John Fisher. The top four teams in this weekend’s tournament and the Oct. 22-23 crossover at Ithaca will play in the conference championship tournament Nov. 7, with the winner earning a berth in the NCAA championships.
