Symposium explores work by noted set designer
The work of noted theater designer Jaroslav Malina will be the topic of a symposium from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in Harder Hall on the Alfred University campus.
Speakers will include Joseph Brandesky, professor of theater at Ohio State University, as well as curator of the exhibition of Malina’s work that will be on display at the Cohen Gallery, Main Street, Alfred, through Oct. 28.
Joining Brandesky will be theater scholars Delbert Unruh and Barbora Prihodova. Unruh is director of theater at the University of Kansas and Prodhodova is a member of the faculty of the arts at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic.
Malina is called a “pioneer of ‘action design’” for his use of non-traditional materials and techniques in stage design. The exhibition features his work from the mid-1960s to the present. Visitors to the exhibition will have an opportunity to see painting, set designs and posters, as well as sketches, photography and a video interview of Malina.
