Currie, McLain advance in doubles play at New York State Championships

ITHACA, NY – Alfred University junior Griffin Currie (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) and senior Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida) advanced from first-round action Friday at the New York State women’s tennis championships.

Currie and McLain won their first-round first doubles match, 8-3, over St. John Fisher’s Marissa Rotondo and Elena Vahl. They were the only AU players to advance past the first round of singles and doubles play at the state tournament, being held Friday, Saturday and Sunday and hosted by Ithaca College. Currie and McLain will play top-seeded Hillary Drewry and Stephanie Finn of St. Lawrence in a quarterfinal match Saturday morning.

AU was swept from singles play. Currie dropped her first singles match, 6-2, 6-2 , to RIT’s Amanda Berg; McLain fell in her her second singles match, 6-2, 6-3, to Casey Kennedy of William Smith; senior Kate Cohen (Bradford, PA/Bradford) lost in third singles, 6-2, 6-2, to Kim Post of Hartwick; sophomore Melissa Boyer (Bloomfield, MI/Lahser) fell in fourth singles, 6-1, 6-2, to Katelyn Smith of St. John Fisher; junior Shannon Tovey (Chester, CT/Valley Regional) lost in fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1, to Katelyn Harness of Ithaca; and sophomore Cady Spencer (Homer, NY/Homer) dropped her sixth singles match, 6-1, 6-1, to Sheritta Wilkins of Nazareth.

Cohen and Tovey lost their second doubles match, 8-1, to Joanie Hilton and Kirara Ocasio, and Boyer and Spencer fell in third doubles, 8-1, to third-seeded Hallsey Leighton and Remy Raevesky of William Smith.
